A biomarker is defined by the U.S. NIH Biomarkers Definitions Working Group as “a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacologic responses to a therapeutic intervention.” Since being defined in 1998, biomarkers have grown in popularity and now play a promising role in accelerating the pace and efficiency of drug development, not just in the U.S. but in other regulatory markets as well.
