Sonia was a recent law school graduate when she learned, in 2011, that she had inherited a fatal genetic mutation in the prion protein gene from her late mother. She is now a PhD student in Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Harvard Medical School, based in Stuart Schreiber's lab at the Broad Institute. She is studying biomarkers and therapeutics for prion disease with the goal of developing a way to prevent prion disease before she becomes sick.
